Characteristics | Leaves alternate, simple. Burford is notable for its "abs" - blistered or bullate leaves.
Usually has a single terminal spine. Red berries in Autumn and Winter. Similar to Ilex cornuta 'Burfordii Nana' but larger in both form and leaf. Bushy, dens,e rounded shrub. Can be limbed up to make a small tree. |
Landscape Uses | One of the more popular Chinese hollies. Makes a thick, impenetrable hedge. Can be used as a backdrop for flowering shrubs or other leaf colours such as Loropetalum chinense. Heavy fruit set gives good winter colour. |
